I like this quote by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe:“When drawing, the artist draws out their soul and parts of their inmost being.”
Drawing is exactly that kind of activity for me. It is often driven by a desire to unite the inner and the outer world, and to draw out something from within myself that can belong in the world, something that seeks to become one with it.
Often, my best drawings are sketches. The fastest and smallest ones often contain something the larger and more detailed drawings lack. In that sense, drawing has taught me a great deal about life.
At the same time, drawing is also technical and constructive for me. It is a way of thinking, and a way of figuring things out. If you look closely at the margins of the sketches, you will find small notes, phone numbers and shopping lists.
The everyday is there, a kind of chaos of thoughts at the edge of something more ordered that is beginning to take shape.
Could it be that what is taking shape is also myself?
